Charter School, Independent Study Reform Bill Advances Before Deadline, May 3, 2021

A summary of all actions taken by the Education Committees last week can be found below; but we wanted to draw your attention to AB 1316, authored by Assembly Member Patrick O’Donnell (D – Long Beach). Likely to be one of the most high-profile education bills this Legislative Session, AB 1316 seeks to make substantial changes to audit and funding provisions for non-classroom based (NCB) charter schools, and also to Independent Study programs. The bill was heard last week and, after lengthy committee discussion and public comment, moved forward on a partisan vote of 5-2.

We plan to release an in-depth analysis of AB 1316 shortly and, as always, we are happy to take your questions on it, or any other legislation as we look ahead to the rest of the 2021 Legislative Session.

Be well,
Nick
