Newsom Admin revising mask requirement to apply to schools, June 22, 2020

On Friday, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) removed a footnote from their original guidance that, at the time, signaled what the Administration told us was their intention to exempt schools and childcare from the mask order.
The revised guidance subjects all persons (school staff, adults, and students) to the mandatory mask rule in “indoor public spaces.” The revised CDPH guidance can be found here.

Our colleagues at AALRR provided this alert explaining the amended guidance.

Based upon the revised guidance, for now it appears K-12 agencies should prepare for the widespread use of face coverings in schools this Fall. However, based upon conversations with Administration officials, it is unclear if they have fully resolved face covering requirements for schools and childcare. We are advocating that they issue any additional clarifications as soon as possible.

We’ll keep you updated.
