Facilitating Transfer of Learning in IB Education

Keynote Speaker

Rick Barlow

Sonoma County Office of Education

Project Coordinator - Math

Dear Colleagues,

In response to the success of our Fall Forum and numerous requests from participants for more time to collaborate, we are happy to announce that the theme of our Spring Seminar will be Facilitating Transfer of Learning in IB Education. Rick Barlow, CAWS MYP Representative and Sonoma County Office of Education Project Coordinator - Math, will lead our focus on the transformative power of the IB Framework.

Keynote synopsis: At the heart of the IB framework lies a profound commitment to meaningful learning and teaching. This keynote centers on the human dimension of that work, emphasizing our collective mission as IB educators to nurture students' cognitive independence through the transfer of learning. This keynote is also a rallying cry for dedicated time and school/district support for this work, recognizing that empowering teachers to design concept-based units demands both.

Rick will lead two or our Featured Sessions: Unlocking Learning Potential: The Art of Concept-Based Unit Planning." While concept-based unit planning holds the key to enabling students to transfer their learning in diverse settings, the reality is that many schools are stuck with lower-level curricular materials, limiting teachers' ability to design powerful learning experiences. Acknowledging the complexity of concept-based unit planning, the first part of this session presents a structured framework to transition from a standards-based unit to a concept-based unit. In the second part of this session, we will dedicate time to hands-on collaboration as teachers work on a unit, benefiting from the collective expertise of their colleagues and the facilitator.

In addition to Rick's Featured Sessions there will be alternative options for PYP, MYP, DP/CP.

Bring a team from your campus or district and use this time together to support your lessons and team building.

I hope you will share the enthusiasm and support generated by joining our network of IB Educators during the CAWS 2024 Spring Seminar.

Looking forward to seeing you in San Diego!

Warm regards,

Robin Oliver
